How to get an IUD
A low maintenance contraceptive option, we can fit (and remove) intrauterine devices – also referred to as IUDs or the coil – with a range of pain relief options. We offer a variety of coil types and dosages, in consultation with your doctor you can choose something that suits you and your lifestyle.
With a vast range of medication available, women are often not given a say in which they’re prescribed – or the rationale behind their prescriptions isn’t explained. It is our ethos at Oxona to make sure women have all the time, support and information – with no judgement – they need before making a decision on their contraception, whether it is the first time they are using it, they want to switch methods or they have a preference and want to stick to it.
At our welcoming clinics, our experienced GPs have the time and expertise to explore your individual circumstances, preferences, anxieties and medical history. We are here to explain all your options, from pills to implants, helping you make an informed decision about which method is best for you, your life and your lifestyle.
Pain relief for coil insertion, replacement and removal
We understand that the insertion of copper IUD and IUD removal can be painful for some women. Your anxieties will be acknowledged and respected, giving you the time to discuss any concerns and presenting your pain relief options, making sure you are fully prepared. We can offer gas and air, local anaesthetics, strong pain-killers or anti-anxiety medications: our goal is to help you relax during the procedure.
You do not need a referral, you can just book for yourself. And because we have greater flexibility with appointments, we can offer shorter wait times and dates that fit in with your schedule and cycle. Then, we’ll discuss the best plan of action for you, whether it’s referral back to the NHS for treatment, or connecting you with a private specialist consultant.
Other contraception options
Oral contraceptive
Oral contraceptives aren’t for everyone, but they might be right for you. We’ll talk you through the different types of pill to find the most suitable option, and compile a tailored ‘break’ regime.
Implant
Another low maintenance contraceptive route, we provide hormonal implant fitting and removal. We can usually provide this service within a week of first making contact with us. No long waiting lists.

What our patients think
Frequently asked questions
Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?
You need to speak to your insurer prior to your appointment. Some insurers will reimburse you for the appointment, but you will need to present any documentation at the time of your appointment for the doctor to sign. Please note that all our doctors are registered with the GMC on the GP register not the consultant register. Please ensure you make this clear to your insurers at the outset.
Do you treat nervous patients?
Yes. We have the luxury of time to ensure our patients are fully informed and feel confident in the treatment they are receiving or any procedures. Our doctors are highly trained specialists in women’s health and procedures. For coil/implants, we can discuss pain relief options and assist in mitigating any fears or concerns.
How much do private prescriptions cost?
All NHS prescriptions are a set fee regardless of the cost of the drug. However, private prescriptions will be charged by the pharmacy for the individual drugs. The cost is roughly £20 for most HRT drugs, and £25 for Testosterone. A course of antibiotics can range from £5-20 per prescription. Your NHS GP may be able to prescribe HRT drugs, but this is at their discretion.
What pain relief do you offer during coil fits?
Our doctors are very experienced in coil fittings, so you’re in safe hands. And while we find that, for many patients, the feeling of confidence and safety makes for a relaxed atmosphere, where they don’t feel like they need or want pain relief, we appreciate this isn’t the case for everyone.
We very much respect patient choice and recognise that coil fits can be painful for some women, affecting everyone differently. We therefore offer codeine and/ or Entonox (nitrous oxide), so feel free to discuss pain relief options with your doctor prior to the procedure.
