How We Remove Warts & Verrucas

At Oxona Health, we use proven medical treatments to remove warts and verrucas safely:

✔ Cryotherapy (Freezing Treatment)

Cryotherapy is the gold-standard treatment for wart and verruca removal. We apply liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart at its core, destroying infected skin cells and preventing the virus from spreading.

Note: Liquid nitrogen is different to cryo-pens. Liquid nitrogen is -196°c, compared to the cryo-pens at around -80°c. There is a distinct difference in outcomes when comparing these treatments. We have liquid nitrogen on site in Didcot, Oxford and St Albans.

  • Quick & effective – Most warts clear in 1–3 sessions
  • Minimal discomfort – Short procedure with mild stinging sensation
  • Prevents recurrence – Targets the root of the wart to stop regrowth

✔ Salicylic Acid Therapy

For some patients, cryotherapy is combined with salicylic acid applications to soften and break down wart tissue. This is especially useful for larger or stubborn verrucas.

What our patients think

I was recommended to come here by my GP. Dr Anderson and her assistant Jasmine make a wonderful team. They both instantly put me at ease and carried out the procedure with great care, professionalism and reassurance, as I was nervous. I would not hesitate to return for any further skin issue and I highly recommend Oxford Skincare Clinic.

- Laura, Oxford

I cannot rate this clinic highly enough. Dr Anderson was very informative, professional and easy to talk to and with her assistant Jasmine, totally put me at ease. They have already resolved some of my issues and I have made an appointment for another procedure, which is made so easy as they are so much cheaper than most of the other places locally.

- Linda, Oxford

Dr Anderson and Jasmine were brilliant, friendly, helpful and professional. I had a sebaceous cyst removed and I am very pleased with the result. Very impressed by the care taken and the time scale everything was completed, I would definitely recommend.

- James, Oxford

I am so pleased that I have had this treatment done. Dr Anderson and Jasmine were so kind. My procedure was carried out efficiently and has been very successful. I would not hesitate to return.

FAQs

What is the difference between a wart and a verruca?

Warts can appear anywhere on the body, while verrucas occur on the soles of the feet. Verrucas often have a flat, rough surface with a black dot in the centre, caused by blood vessels.

Are warts and verrucas dangerous?

No, warts and verrucas are harmless, but they can be painful, unsightly, and contagious. Some may resolve on their own, but persistent, painful or spreading lesions should be treated.

Can warts and verrucas spread?

Yes, they are contagious and spread through skin contact and shared surfaces like swimming pools, gym floors, and showers.

Do over-the-counter wart treatments work?

Some salicylic acid treatments may help with small warts, but stubborn or deep-rooted verrucas often require professional treatment like cryotherapy.

How long does wart and verruca removal take?

The procedure itself takes just a few minutes. Your clinician will likely complete rounds of treatments to each verruca in the same session, inducing a freeze-thaw cycle. Full healing can take 1–3 weeks depending on the size and location of the wart.

Does wart or verruca removal hurt?

Yes, a little! However, discomfort is short lived and should not cause too much pain. We only recommend treatment for over 10s for this reason.

The treated area may be sore for a day or two afterwards. It may blister slightly and whilst there is no ‘down-time’, you may wish to be mindful of activities for a couple of days.

Do I need to have a pre-op consultation?

No, you can self-book directly into a verruca freeze appointment. All our consultations are with qualified doctors, so if ever any doubt about the diagnosis we will always be able to help.

Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?

You need to speak to your insurer prior to your appointment. Some insurers will reimburse you for the appointment, but you will need to present any documentation at the time of your appointment for the doctor to sign. Please note that we have doctors on both the GP and Consultant registers with the GMC – please ensure you check suitability with your insurer prior to treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

Most warts clear in 1–3 cryotherapy sessions, depending on size and depth.

Will the wart or verruca return after treatment?

Once treated, the same wart will not return, but new ones may develop if the virus is still present. Following aftercare advice reduces this risk.
